Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has emphasised the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digitalisation in revolutionising safety practices and workplace wellness across the country.
The Fund, therefore, charged employers of labour to embrace the trend.
Speaking at the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Forum held in commemoration of the 2025 World Day for Safety and Health at Work, stakeholders: National Assembly, Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) and Nigeria Employers Consultative Association (NECA) representatives declared that technology now plays a pivotal role in creating smarter, safer, and more responsive work environments.
“We are in a pivotal moment for occupational health and safety”, said Mr. Oluwaseun Faleyez, the Managing Director of NSITF. In his keynote address, he described the integration of AI into workplace systems as “a game-changer.”
“AI-powered predictive analytics, real-time monitoring systems, and digitalized safety management platforms are revolutionizing our ability to predict, prevent, and respond to potential workplace hazards.:
“These technologies have empowered users to proactively identify risks, mitigate potential dangers, and ultimately create safer working environments for all if leveraged positively.”
Faleye emphasized the growing influence of technology beyond physical safety, extending into workplace wellness and mental health support.
“With digital tools, organizations can now implement comprehensive wellness programs, provide mental health support, and foster a culture of well-being among employees.”
However, he warned that these innovations must be matched with responsibility and capacity building.
“It is imperative that we acknowledge the need for continuous learning and adaptation. The integration of AI demands a workforce equipped with the necessary skills to utilize these tools effectively. Equally important is ensuring compliance, ethics, and technological safety frameworks.”
Hon. Mojisolaoluwa Kehinde Alli-Macaulay, Executive Director of Operations at NSITF, further anchored the message of collective responsibility and empowerment in her welcome address.
“This forum aligns perfectly with our mandate under the Employees’ Compensation Act to prevent workplace injuries, disabilities, and fatalities.
“Our theme today, ‘Revolutionising Health and Safety: The Role of AI and Digitalisation’ is both timely and visionary. We are gathered here to share knowledge, tackle challenges, and explore the future impact of AI on occupational safety.”
She praised OSH professionals for their resilience and called on stakeholders to commit to building capacity.
“We understand the vital role OSH professionals play in safeguarding the well-being of workers, and we are dedicated to supporting their growth and development.”
Alli-Macaulay also acknowledged the NSITF Managing Director and the planning team for their contributions, adding: “As we come together today, let us explore collaborative opportunities to make our workplaces not only safer but also more innovative.”
Representing the organized labour movement, Comrade Esther Asebe Ahmadu, Chairperson of the TUC Women Commission, delivered remarks on behalf of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and its President General, Comrade Engr. Festus Osifo. She affirmed labour’s support for the responsible integration of AI and digital tools into safety frameworks.
“We celebrate the transformative power of technology in creating safer and healthier workplaces. AI-driven analytics, safety devices, and predictive risk modeling are reshaping how we identify and mitigate hazards.”
However, Ahmadu cautioned that technology should never replace human-centered safety approaches.
“Let us remember that technology must complement—not replace—our commitment to human-centric safety practices. Every worker deserves a safe and healthy environment.”
She made a strong call to action: “We must leverage AI and digital tools to predict and prevent workplace risks. We must invest in training to ensure workers and professionals can utilize these technologies effectively. And above all, we must foster a culture of safety where innovation and human health work hand in hand.”
