The Northern Elders Political Development Group has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s security efforts, which have significantly improved safety across the North West region.
The group also commended the Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for their coordinated efforts in tackling banditry and restoring peace.
According to the group’s secretary, Dr Adamu Lawal Giwa, most towns and villages in the region observed Eid-el-Fitr peacefully, without the usual fear of bandit attacks. However, he acknowledged that sporadic incidents of violence were still recorded in some villages in Sokoto and Zamfara states.
The commendation follows the success of Operation Fansa Yamma, a military offensive that has led to the destruction of several bandit hideouts and a noticeable improvement in security across the region.
The group highlighted how the improved security has positively impacted economic activities, particularly along major trade routes.
“The security situation in the North West has improved significantly, reducing risks associated with travel and trade along key corridors like Sokoto-Gusau-Kano. Reports of large-scale bandit attacks and kidnappings have notably declined,” the group stated.
Military efforts, especially in Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina states, have been particularly effective, leading to major breakthroughs in combating banditry.
“The measures implemented under Operation Fansa Yamma, as promised by President Tinubu, have yielded significant results. Kidnappings and bandit attacks have reduced across many villages. The military’s proactive approach, including targeted strikes on bandit enclaves, has been a game changer,” the statement added.
The group also acknowledged the relief that these security improvements have brought to residents, especially during and after the Ramadan fasting period.
Expressing their gratitude, the elders lauded the dedication of the military leadership and personnel who have sacrificed their lives to ensure the safety of citizens.
“We commend the Minister of State for Defence, Mohammed Bello Matawalle, for his continuous support to the armed forces. His efforts have boosted troop morale and contributed significantly to recent successes. We also recognise the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, for his effective coordination of security operations to restore stability in the North.”
Despite these positive developments, the group acknowledged that security challenges remain but emphasised that the progress made so far signals a move in the right direction.
The elders reiterated their unwavering support for President Tinubu’s administration, urging continued efforts to sustain peace and security in the region.
“With the noticeable improvements in security, we reaffirm our support for President Tinubu. We pray for his continued commitment to ending banditry and other criminal activities threatening our people,” they stated.
However, the group expressed concern over reports of isolated attacks in villages within Sabon Birni and Isa, Sokoto State, as well as in parts of Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara states.
Despite these challenges, they concluded by commending the armed forces for their dedication to protecting lives and property and their ongoing efforts to root out banditry from the region.
