The National Judicial Council (NJC) has taken disciplinary action against three judges, barring them from elevation to higher benches for two to three years.
The judges are:
– Justice Inyang Ekwo, who was barred for two years for abusing his discretionary power by improperly granting an ex parte order.
– Justice GB Brikins-Okolosi, who was barred for three years for failing to deliver a judgment within the stipulated period.
– Justice Amina Shehu, who was cautioned for issuing a writ of possession without a subsisting judgment to justify it.
The NJC’s decision followed its 105th plenary meeting on May 15 and 16, 2024, chaired by Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.
The Council also reviewed 35 petitions against judges from the Federal and State High Courts and formed eight committees to investigate meritorious cases.
Additionally, the NJC recommended 86 judicial officers for appointment to various courts, including the Court of Appeal, High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Sharia Courts of Appeal, and Customary Courts of Appeal.
These candidates will be sworn in after the NJC’s recommendations are approved by the President and their respective state governors.
The NJC’s actions aim to ensure the integrity and accountability of the judiciary and maintain public trust in the legal system.
