The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, (NiMet) has organised a five-day capacity building workshop for Marine Meteorologists on Marine Forecasting in Calabar, Cross River State.
In his welcome address, the Director-General/CEO of NiMet, Professor Mansur Bako Matazu, who was represented by the Director, Applied Meteorological Services, Engineer Mailadi Yusuf, told the participants that the kind of services expected of the Agency in the Marine and Maritime sectors, which covers safety for ocean going/coming vessels, oil exploration including other oil and gas related activities, fishing, conservation of the eco-system, and recreation, were fundamental to the economic growth of the country.
Matazu said it was in this light that the Agency had embarked on a renewed reach-out to all stakeholders in the Marine, Maritime, Security and the Oil & Gas sectors to understand and assess their needs with a view to instituting programs and projects that were aimed at meeting those needs among other needs.
He used the opportunity to congratulate the participants and resource persons for being selected to participate in the training, while urging them to pay adequate attention to the resource persons and participate fully in the training.
Matazu also appreciated the guidance and stewardship role played by the Director, Applied Meteorological Services, and the leadership of the Marine Meteorology Unit of the Agency.
“As NiMet is striving to address the dearth of meteorological information in the marine and allied sectors, it is important to seek the cooperation of all stakeholders in the industry in supporting NiMet to deliver on the anticipated results that will meet stakeholder needs in the industry. This will certainly reduce or eliminate the dependence on foreign providers of meteorological services for information and will reduce capital outflow from the country thereby improving the nation’s economy.”
On her part, the Head, Marine Meteorological Services, Mrs. Glory Onyegbule, while declaring the workshop open, said upon the assumption of duty of Matazu as the DG/CEO of NiMet in March 2021, one of his cardinal priority areas was marine meteorology due to the huge potential it holds for the Agency.
She thanked the DG for his unflinching support towards the realisation of the workshop especially in approving the purchase of marine met equipment and upgrade of the Marine met station, while acknowledging that proceeds from the training will launch deep into delivering a world class marine service.
