Nigerian football enthusiasts have been responding to the recently disclosed roster of referees set to officiate at the forthcoming TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote D’Ivoire in 2023.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) revealed an extensive list featuring 85 referees encompassing center referees, assistant referees, Video Assistant Referees (VARs), technical instructors, physical trainers, VAR technicians, and IT support for a preparatory course. However, notably absent from the list are any Nigerian referees.
President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries have extended their congratulations to Nigerian football figures who were recognized for their outstanding achievements.
President Tinubu commended Nigeria’s Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen, for securing the CAF 2023 Men’s Player of the Year award.
He also acknowledged the remarkable achievements of Asisat Oshoala from Nigeria’s Super Falcons, who claimed the 2023 CAF Women’s Player of The Year for the sixth time, along with Chiamaka Nnadozie, honoured as the Woman Goalkeeper of the Year.
Additionally, he applauded the Super Falcons for earning recognition as the Women’s National Team of the Year at the CAF Awards 2023.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed his delight as a football fan and Nigerian, celebrating the extraordinary accomplishments of these football stars at the #CAFAwards2023.
