A women’s rights group, Voices for Inclusion and Equity for Women (VIEW), has called on Senate President Godswill Akpabio to step aside to allow for an independent and transparent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a statement signed by key members on Tuesday, the group expressed deep concern over what it described as persistent gender inequity and systemic disrespect for women in the 10th Senate.
The organisation emphasised that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations should not be ignored or trivialised, warning that failure to act decisively would further entrench a culture of impunity within Nigeria’s legislative system.
The statement partly reads. “Given the gravity of these allegations, it is both ethical and necessary for the Senate President to step aside in order to allow for a truly independent and transparent investigation.
The group stressed that no individual, regardless of position, should wield unchecked power to suppress or intimidate female senators.

VIEW also criticised what it called the arbitrary exercise of power within the Senate, particularly in relation to procedural issues such as the reallocation of seating arrangements.
The group demanded a review of Senate rules to prevent the marginalisation of female lawmakers and to ensure that internal regulations reflect democratic values.
Raising concerns over previous allegations of sexual misconduct against Akpabio, the women’s group insisted that the Senate must take a firm stance against such accusations and uphold accountability within its ranks.
“This is not the first time such accusations have been made, and this disturbing pattern warrants urgent scrutiny.”
The group further urged all senators, aides, and legislative staff to ensure that Akpoti-Uduaghan receives a fair and impartial hearing.
