THE leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students has asked the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engineer Babachir Lawal to appear before the Senate to clear his name or quit from the government over fraud allegation on the award of contracts for intervention projects meant for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS), in the North East.
The student body has threatened to mobilise its members to occupy the SGF Office on the expiration of a 7-day ultimatum, if Lawal fails to subject himself to the Senate probe or quit from the Office as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
Lawal has been in the eye of the storm over alleged diversion of funds and materials meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPS), especially the alleged use of  N270m to clear grass by the office of the Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF).
NANS Public Relations Officer, Mr Odebunmi Idowu and NANS Senate President, Mr Bamigbade Taiwo who addressed newsmen on Monday in Abuja, said the refusal of the SGF to appear before the Senate committee probing the allegation, was a great setback to the anti-corruption fight of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Idowu, who read the text of news conference said: “Our leadership has resolved to occupy the office of the SGF upon expiration of our 7-day ultimatum issued to the SGF in our correspondence earlier sent to him.
“It is discouraging that a top Government functionary like SGF is tagging to the court injunction to stop his appearance before the Senate for questioning over fraud allegation.”
The students, however, appealed to the National Assembly to shun all forms of distractions and expedite action the passage of 2017 budget to ease the economy recovery plan by the Federal government.
Meanwhile, the National Association of Nigerian Students has announced the withdrawal of its honour earlier bestowed on the Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos (UNILAG) Professor Abdurrahman Bello over alleged anti-student union policies of his administration.
Public Relations Officer of NANS, Mr Odebunmi Idowu told newsmen at the news conference that the Bello was honoured by the students in 2015 when he came on board as the Vice Chancellor of the University and restored student union activities on the campus.
He lamented that the same Vice Chancellor that was honoured by the students has decided  to suddenly change by not only proscribing student union activities on the campus but has resort to indiscriminate suspension and expulsion of students’ leaders on the campus.
