My wife drinks to stupour, fights me, neighbours —Husband

Ile Tuntun Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, recently dissolved the marriage between a couple, Mojeed Mustapha and Bose Mustapha.

Mojeed, who dragged his wife to court, complained that she was troublesome and in the habit of fighting.

He added that she has failed to be a good mother to their children whom she constantly neglected.

Mojeed further said that his wife was a drunk. According to him, she refused to change despite reporting her to her parents.

He stated that they counseled her on regular basis but she remained adamant.

The plaintiff stated that the defendant dumped their children with him in his new apartment and rained curses on him.

Mustapha, therefore, pleaded with the court to separate him and his wife.

The plaintiff further requested that the court grant him custody of their children because his wife was indifferent to their welfare.

Bose agreed to the dissolution of their marriage.

The defendant stated that her husband and his family members maltreated her.

Bose explained that her husband’s siblings were in the habit of fighting and beating her.

According to her, any time she made a report to her husband, he would always take sides with his siblings and would tell her she deserved whatever punishment that was meted out to her by them.

The defendant further said that the plaintiff abandoned her and their children and moved out of their apartment while his sister forcefully took their last child from her.

She added that this same sister threw her belongings out of her mother in-law’s apartment where she moved into after being deserted by her husband.

The defendant prayed the court to grant her custody of their children because they needed  her motherly care.

“My lord, my wife has soiled my name in our compound and my reputation in the neighbourhood because she is troublesome and always fighting me, ”Mojeed told the court.

“Bose has no shame. Her lifestyle is void of virtues and lacks nothing worthy of emulating by our children.

“Bose fights me and our neighbours on regular basis. She also extended this disgraceful behaviour to those in the neighbourhood.

“My wife has no friend as a result of her degrading lifestyle. No one wants to associate with her.

“My lord, my wife is a drunk.

“While other women rise up early to put their homes in order, my wife runs after bottles of beer.

“Bose abandons her responsibility in the home and takes to drinking immediately I step out of the house.

“She will drink herself to stupour and then start to fight.

“My wife becomes aggressive when she’s drunk and will fight me to a standstill. She has refused that I have rest of mind.

“My lord, our neighbours are tired of living in the same compound with us because my wife makes our compound too hot for comfort. These are tired of mediating in our difference because many times, Bose will turn around to fight them.

“Those in the neighbourhood are not exempted from Bose’s unfriendly behaviour. They as such avoid her, “he said.

He added that, “Bose is obviously not interested in our children’s welfare. She has failed to give them the attention needed.

“I moved out of our apartment and rented a new one when I realised she would snuff life out of me as a result of her irresponsible behaviour, but she stormed my place one day, shouting and raining curses on me. She left our children at my place and I took up the challenge of taking care of them.

“I have reported my wife to her parents times without number, but there appears to be no change in her behaviour.

“My lord, I’m tired of fighting and raising my voice every day.

“I pray this honourable court to end our marriage and grant me custody of our children, “the plaintiff pleaded.

Bose in her testimony said: “My lord, I have never enjoyed my marriage to my husband because my husband’s siblings make life tough for me.

“Mojeed’s siblings treat me like a maid. They order me around and are also in the habit of beating me.

“Any time I report to Mojeed that his siblings beat me, he will throw his weight behind them.  He will tell me I deserve their beatings.

“My husband once packed his belongings and moved out of the house after he was ill-advised by his family members. I came home and met an empty apartment. It was our neighbours who told me he had left.

“I moved in with his mother but his elder sister in particular refused that I had rest of mind. She made life difficult for me and later threw my belongings out of his mother’s in-law apartment.

“She took our baby from me by force and didn’t allow me to leave with him. The baby was returned to me in the new apartment I rented after he took ill because he was under fed and looking malnourished.

“My husband and I made up again and I moved in with him but his family members still insisted I would have no rest.

“They raised an issue against the paternity of our new born baby and poisoned my husband’s mind against me. They called our baby a bastard in the open.

“My husband to my chagrin believed them and became withdrawn. He neglected me and the children and didn’t care if we ate or not. I hawked sachet water to take care of our children’s welfare.

“Mojeed  became warm towards me and this child in particular only when he discovered he was has a semblance of him.

“My lord, I agree to divorce but plead that the custody of our children be granted me. They need my motherly care, “she stated.

The court president, Chief Olasunkanmi Agbaje, after he had adjourned the case and further listened to both parties and their family members, ruled that their marriage was dissolved.
