Chairman of Tse Yandev camp located in Makurdi, the capital city of Benue State, Yev Gabriel has said that the camp still receives displaced persons.
Gabriel said that over 300 people displaced by suspected herdsmen were received in the last month.
He noted that the displaced persons fled from Guma in Benue, parts of Nasarawa and Taraba states.
Gabriel stated this when newsmen visited the camp Monday evening.
The camp leader said that more persons were fleeing from their homes in some Benue communities into the camp as a result of incessant attacks on them by suspected herdsmen.
He explained that the shanty camp which had an initial number of 10,102 inmates now has a total number of 10,407.
The camp chairman said that the number of households has also increased from 5,249 to 5,384, adding that the total male population is 3,457 while the female is 6,645.
Gabriel said that the major sickness recorded in the camp is malaria, saying that over 200 of the inmates have been treated for malaria in the last few days.
“So with that figure, we have an increase of 305 inmates at the IDP camp in the last one month.
“Our survival here has been very terrible. We survive by assistance from churches, smaller non-governmental organisations and well-meaning Nigerians. There is no government presence here. The State Emergency Management Agency staff are not on the ground here. There is no health facility, no food provision.
“Construction of toilet that is ongoing is done by Doctors Without Borders. We appreciate them because, without them, there would not have been any physical structure here. They have also, been providing water for us through tankers.
“They came and did a feasibility study for the drilling of a borehole and we hope it will be done soon. An NGO from Lagos heard about the outbreak of malaria and brought noodles as well as the sum of 50,000 naira which we have already exhausted in purchasing drugs.
“It is sad to say that when it rains, we usually relocate especially the aged and nursing mothers to uncompleted building around the camp. They are compelled to stand till the rain stops. And if it rains throughout the night, they stand throughout.
“Though government has given approval for us to stay here following intervention by Doctors Without Borders, we are appealing passionately to the State government and well-meaning Nigerians to come to our aid in the area of food, shelter and medication,” Yev passionately appealed.
