Children of late educationist, Mrs Modesola Bassir, have launched an Educational Foundation to immortalise her particularly for her role in the development of education in Nigeria.
During a press briefing jointly addressed by two of her children, Mr Dimeji Bassir and Mrs Morenike Taire, the children noted that:”It is our distinct honour to introduce the Modesola Bassir Educational Foundation (MBEF), a non-profit organisation established in 2023 to continue the legacy of Mrs Modesola Bassir of blessed memory, foster her lifelong commitment to education, and drive the sustainable development of human capacity within communities in Nigeria.
“At MBEF, we envision a society where every child has access to educational opportunities that will enable them be competitive with any of their peers globally.
It is not news that a sound education helps create strong leaders and stable communities.
“It is worthy of note that Modesola Bassir was a child of circumstances. Born on the 2nd of September, 1945 in her hometown of Okitipupa, Ondo state, her late father though a man of means, was an unfettered goldsmith who however saw the advantages of education, even for his girl child.
“While the Olumbe Bassir family is fully committed to this Charter, it is open to welcoming donors from individuals to corporate organisations, Governments as well as more established non-profits alike, to help us raise the funds needed to actualise the foundation’s objectives on a sustainable basis.
“Ladies and gentlemen, a partnership with MBEF shall help make the difference for children, their families and the community at large.”
Asked why the choice of promoting education to immortalise their mother, Mr Dimeji Bassir, statded that:”During my interraction with many of the students who have passed through her, I realised how much of an impact she has made on them ans so much so that many of them have always brought her in to be part of their reunion in order to honour her, to recognise her and show appreciation for what she was able to impact on them.
“So, education was the cornerstone of what she believed in. She believed in opportunities for all children considering the background she came from, her father was not educated but he made sure her education was the best.”
Mrs Modesola Bassir, born on September 2, 1945, died on March 9, 2023. A christian wake, service of songs as well as night of tribute were held in her honour last Thursday and has since been buried after a church service held at Methodist Church, Nigeria, Bodija.
