Man to die by hanging for armed robbery in Ondo

robberyA High Court sitting in Akure, Ondo state capital, on Thursday, sentenced a member of a notorious armed robbery gang, James Ofem, to death by hanging.

Justice Williams Olamide, who handed down the sentence after finding Ofem guilty of conspiracy armed robbery, said that the prosecution has proved the case beyond reasonable doubt.

Olamide ruled that Ofem was guilty of the two-count charge of an armed robbery which contrary to Section 1 (2) (a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R11 Vol. 14 laws of the Federation of Nigeria.

According to the charge sheet, Ofem and some other members of his gang on July 12, 2017, conspired to robbed one Adamu Mustapha of his valuables which included IPad and phones.

The prosecutor, Wale Bamisile, from the state Department of Public Prosecution, (DPP) Ministry of Justice had recalled how Ofem and his gang robbed their victim.

Another witness, Sergeant Franklin Alabi of Enuowa Police Station who tendered the exhibit recovered from the suspect before the court noted that investigation into the case all revealed that the culprit was found culpable in the robbery case.

He narrated how the police received a distress call about the robbery attack which eventually led to the arrest of Ofem

Another witness, Adamu Mustapha, also explained how he was robbed by the gang at liyetu village along Ondo/Ore road, saying that the gang blocked the road while his bus rammed into the bandit, who robbed them of cash and other valuables.

During the operation, the men were armed with weapons such as a gun, knives, Cutlass, stones and broken bottles.
