Makinde signs executive orders on mining, establishment of Tourism Ministry

The Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, on Monday signed two significant Executive Orders. The first establishes the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, while the second focuses on safeguarding mining communities in Oyo State against insecurity and exploitation.

The signing ceremony took place in the Conference Room of the Governor’s Office at the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan. Governor Makinde emphasized that these Executive Orders provide legal support to the administration’s initiatives in the solid mineral and tourism sectors.

These Executive Orders align with the administration’s economic expansion plan, as outlined in the Oyo State Roadmap for Sustainable Development, 2023-2027. Governor Makinde clarified that, although mining falls under the exclusive legislative list, the state government chose to be proactive in protecting mining communities from security issues, exploitation, and environmental concerns.

He also discussed the Executive Order related to the creation of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, highlighting that this move involved separating the Ministry from the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism. He emphasized the importance of culture and tourism as essential elements of their roadmap for sustainable development, 2023-2027. Additionally, the Ministry of Information now encompasses the civic orientation unit within its responsibilities.

Notable attendees at the signing of these executive orders included the Deputy Governor, Barr Bayo Lawal, Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, Chief of Staff to the governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi, the Attorney General/Commissioner for Justice, Barr Biodun Aikomo, Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Wasiu Olatunbosun, Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, and the Director-General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency, Mr Abiodun Oni.
