Living on hope in Nigeria

NigeriaNigeria is a country that I love beyond explanations. To me, there is no better home.

I love Nigeria because it’s a blessed country; blessed with human and natural resources, fertile lands for agricultural production, animal husbandry, suitable weather, to mention but just a few.

But much as I love my country, it has dawned on me that our successive leaders do not help matters because of their greed, self-conceit, avarice and intractable desire to amass monumental wealth for their personal aggrandizement.

It is a pity that since I was born almost six decades ago, it is the same lyrics that reverberate out of the mouth of citizens: ‘Nigeria will change for the better’.

How long are we hoping that a country of almost 60 years of independence will one day become a better country, when some countries that are not even half the size of Nigeria have reached the apogee of development and still growing, developing themselves for the sake of their incoming generations?

In Nigeria, our leaders don’t have passion for the betterment of the present generation, not to talk of the future ones.

In spite of what we have in terms of wealth, money, fame and power, it is a pity to see the citizens of Nigeria dying in poverty and squalor due to callous deprivation of their rights to live normally as it is expected of a normal human being.

Nigeria is blessed with electricity but cannot enjoy it because of its epileptic condition.

It behoves President Muhammadu Buhari to rise up to the occasion, by re-girding his loins and make sure that peace reigns supreme across the length and breadth of Nigeria.

Sayo Alagbe,

Ogbomoso.
