In its effort to improve the health status of Nigerians, the Lift Above Poverty Organisation (LAPO), through its community health awareness outreach, has commenced cancer screening for the residents of the Evbuomodu community and its environs.
This is coming less than a week after the organisation carried out another health awareness sensitization on the students of Cherry Land Royal School and Divine Redeemer Academy School in Benin City, as the students were also taught how to make different products.
In its recent health awareness screening and sensitization, LAPO carried out free cervical and breast cancer screenings on women in the locality, numbering over 200, just as it also screened the male population for prostate cancer.
Speaking to our correspondent during the exercise, Osaro Valentina, a staff member of the LAPO, said that the exercise, which is continuous, would give people the opportunity to know their health status in the area of cancer, adding that early detection is key to survival.
She said that the event was part of LAPO’s activities to mark 2023 World Breast Cancer Day; hence, the programmes are aimed at sensitising people to the dangers inherent in the disease.
Speaking in the same vein, Oseijire Agnes, another LAPO staff member at the event, said that the organisation decided to screen and sensitise the people about the disease owing to its dangerous nature in society.
She disclosed that the World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that 14,943 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer yearly, while 10,403 die even though the disease is preventable.
In their separate remarks, the Coordinator of the Evbuomodu Primary Healthcare Centre, represented by Uyi Obaseki Uwaila, and the Officer in Charge of the PHC, Iyere Anthonia, commended LAPO for the gesture, just as they called on the people in the communities to go for the exercise.
They, however, opined that every woman and man is at risk of cervical and prostrate cancer, adding that almost all cases of cervical cancer are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which will in turn spread through skin-to-skin sexual intercourse.
Medical experts listed abnormal bleeding during or after sexual intercourse or between periods, post-menopausal bleeding, unusual and unpleasant vergina discharge, discomfort or pain during sex, lower back pains, frequent urination, painful urination, blood on the urine, and difficulty starting and maintaining a steady stream of urine as some of the symptoms of cervical and prostrate cancer.
Ojutu Rukky, Patience Asagbonbuomwan (Evbuomodu Woman Leader), Anthony Seyiesola, and Hon. Lucky Idemudia (Evbuomodu Youth Leader), Chairman of the LAPO Community Health Outreach in the affected communities, thanked the organisation for coming to their aid.
“I want to thank LAPO for this free medical screening and sensitization, and I feel very happy about it. This is because, if it had required money, I wouldn’t have been able to afford it”, Madam Asagbonbuomwan said
On her part, Ojetu Rukky said, “I appreciate this screening and sensitization programme of LAPO, as I was informed by medical experts that early detection is key”.
