But it is only 2, 200 from the figure that is needed for employment to augment the dearth of teachers in both public primary and secondary schools across the state.
The applicants, which overshoot the needed figure by 2,289 per cent even amidst slow internet system applied via a dedicated online portal opened on Friday, August 31 and lasted six days.
Giving the breakdown of applicants, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mrs Adebunmi Adekanye, said the applicants were in two categories, namely those for secondary schools to fill 1,200 vacancies available and others for the primary schools to fill the 1,000 vacancies at that level.
She noted that 44,725 people applied to compete for 1,200 vacancies at the secondary school level while those for primary schools were 21,093 people.
Adekanye, in a statement made available to the newsmen by the ministry’s deputy public affairs director, Mr Adesegun Ogundeji, attributed a large number of applications received within that short time largely to what she called prompt payment of salaries and good welfare package to teachers in the state public schools and to other government workers.
