In fulfilment of its promise to hand over some of the locally fabricated new boats to passenger boat operators, the Lagos State Government has handed over ten of the 15 high-capacity, locally fabricated boats to ferry operators under the aegis of the Association of Tourist Boat Operators and Water Transporters of Nigeria (ATBOWATON) and the Waterfront Boat Owners and Transport Association (WABOTAN).
Disclosing this exclusively to Tribune Online in Lagos on Wednesday, National President of WABOTAN, Comrade Babatope Fajemirokun revealed that the ten boats were handed over to boat operators about two weeks ago.
According to the WABOTAN National President, “In May, the Lagos State Government promised to hand over some of the 15 high-capacity, locally fabricated boats to ferry operators in order to enhance capacity for operators.
“I can confirm to you that two weeks ago, the State government handed over ten of the 15 boats to us. Our association, WABOTAN got one. ATBOWATON got one, then eight other operators under both associations got one boat each.”
Recall that in May 2024, during the commissioning of the first phase of 1t new boats, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu had promised to hand over some of the boats to private operators to enhance capacity on the state’s inland waterways.
“The new ferries, fabricated in partnership with Caverton Marine, are designed to carry 40 passengers each, doubling the capacity of our existing vessels. This project marks the beginning of a new era in water transportation, offering a faster, cleaner, and more comfortable commute.
“The deployment of these ferries underscores our dedication to reducing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between communities. By saving hours lost in traffic, we are boosting economic prosperity and enhancing the quality of life for our residents.
“This initiative aligns perfectly with our THEMES+ agenda, promoting pollution-free mobility and integrating an intermodal transportation system. The new ferries operate on the Cowry Card payment system, ensuring seamless and efficient service for all users.
“We are not stopping here. An additional 25 high-capacity ferries will be fabricated in the second phase, further expanding our waterway routes and reducing turnaround times. These ferries are equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure safety, comfort, and convenience for all passengers.
“Our commitment to enhancing the Lagos transportation system is unwavering. With new patrol boats, a Search and Rescue Unit, and a floating clinic, we are ensuring that our waterways are safe and efficient.
“Together, we are building a Lagos that thrives on innovation and sustainability,” Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated during the commission in May.”
