The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, on Monday released a nursing mother who was detained at Agbowa police station for stealing plantain.
It was gathered that the police boss, who was on his way to Itokin and other parts of Epe to monitor the policemen who were posted there to checkmate the activities of kidnappers, paid an unscheduled visit to Agbowa Division.
The police boss reportedly visited the station’s cell where a woman and her baby were detained for stealing plantain at the local market.
The unnamed woman reportedly confessed to have stolen the plantain but the police boss pardoned her and asked the police officers on duty to release her.
CP Owoseni also reportedly gave a cash of N10,000 to the detained woman and warned her not to steal again.
A police source, who was part of the CP’s entourage told Metro that “a mob actually arrested the woman, after she allegedly stole the plantain”.
“A patrol team was moving in the area, when the policemen saw a large crowd and they promptly moved in and saved the woman from being lynched,” the police source added.
He also stated that “it was in the evening and by the time she was taken to the station, it was already late”.
The source disclosed further that “she was not the only one in the cell. The CP only pitied her baby.”
