Lagos CP begs IGP for arms and ammunition as police arrest 2228 armed criminals

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu has appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba to assist the state police command with lethal and non-lethal arm and ammunition to tackle crimes in the state.

The police boss made the appeal on Wednesday at the state police command headquarters in Lagos during the maiden official visit of the IGP to the state.

CP Odumosu also stated that the police in the state have arrested two thousand two hundred and twenty-eight (2,228) suspects in connection with different crimes.

The Lagos police boss also maintained that the crime rate has reduced drastically and identified: cultism, traffic robbery, traffic congestion and gangsterism.

CP Odumosu in his welcome address to the IGP said “Generally, majorly noticeable crime waves in Lagos State are anchored on cultism ,robbery in traffic, traffic congestion and gangsterism.”

The Lagos CP stressed that ” however, with the anti-crime strategies emplaced by the command, these menaces have been reduced to their barest minimum.

He also stated that “at this juncture, permit me to state categorically that the command has not recorded any violent crimes, especially, bank robbery, kidnapping, banditry etc in the last 20 months.”

“This invariably doesn’t suggest that the unscrupulous elements never attempted to strike in the state, but the proactive and effective policing measures established and being executed across the length and breadth of the state form the major obstacle that prevent them from actualizing their nefarious goals.”

On the achievement of the police in the state, CP Odumosu said “in totality, the command was able to arrest two thousand, two hundred and twenty-eight (2,228) suspects in connection with offences ranging from armed robbery, cultism, murder, hooliganism and defilement /rape in the state, while eighty-seven (87) arms and one hundred and twenty-nine (129) ammunition of various calibres were recovered.”

The Lagos CP also added that “In addition, thirty-six (36) stolen vehicles were recovered by the command within the period under review.”

CP Odumosu, however, pleaded that f furthermore, the Command will appreciate the support of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, NPM,fdc, in the areas of providing a large quantity of smoke/canisters, smoke gunners, body armours, tracking devices, indoor ranges, personal-defence kits like pepper sprays, Tasers, stun guns etc.”

He further appealed that “I want to passionately appeal to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, NPM, fdc, to assist the Command in facilitating the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the police stations and barracks that were burnt and vandalized during the 2020 violent #EndSARS protest in the state to enable the displaced families to be accommodated.”
