Lagos Assembly crisis, direct attack on rule of law — Rhodes-Vivour

Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos State for the 2023 election, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has strongly condemned the forceful takeover of the State House of Assembly by the sacked former Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, describing it as a direct attack on democratic institutions and the rule of law.

Rhodes-Vivour, in a statement made available to newsmen over the weekend, expressed grave concerns over the development, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent for governance in Lagos.

According to him, the situation at the Lagos State House of Assembly represents a troubling pattern where might is increasingly valued over right.

He asserted that this forceful seizure of the legislative chambers undermines the very foundations of the nation’s democracy and sends a disturbing message about how power is wielded in the state.

“This forceful seizure of the legislative chambers undermines the very foundations of our democracy and sends a disturbing message about how power is wielded in our state,” the LP chieftain said.

He accused the ruling party of fostering a culture of violence rather than focusing on governance and progressive policies, stressing that such tactics erode public trust and weaken democratic values.

“For too long, Lagos politics has been defined by intimidation rather than inspiration, by coercion rather than conviction. The ruling party has consistently demonstrated a willingness to use force to have its way, notwithstanding the popular will of the people,” he stated.

The former LP governorship candidate, however, urged Lagosians to view the crisis as a critical moment ahead of future elections, emphasizing the importance of electing leaders with integrity, competence, and a commitment to public service.

Additionally, the LP chieftain underscored the need for accountability in governance, insisting that Lagos must move beyond coercion-driven politics and embrace leadership that prioritizes the welfare of the people.
