Kwara state commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Sa’adatu Modibbo-Kawu, and her counterpart in the Ministry of Tertiary Education, Dr Mrs Mary Arinde, have identified distraction with mobile devices among school children as a reason for lack of interest in reading culture.
Speaking at the occasion marking the World Read Aloud Day organised by the government in conjunction with Plat Technologies at one of the public schools in the state; Government Girls Day Secondary School, Okesuna, Ilorin, on Wednesday, the commissioners, however, noted that school children can use their mobile devices to access free books and read at their leisure time to develop their skills.
The educationists urged parents to encourage their children to cultivate the habit of reading to prepare them for a brighter future.
Madibbo-Kawu encouraged the children to read to enable them to imbibe the culture right from home and develop themselves.
She explained that the state government is now laying emphasis on knowledge of numeracy and reading in schools.
She also said that the programme, aimed to promote reading culture, would enable the children to read and pass their examinations with good grades.
Also speaking, Kwara state commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Mary Arinde, said that the programme was capable of giving children the courage to sit and read on their own.
She said the programme would also assist in raising the standard of education in the state.
In his comments, the facilitator of the programme and chief executive of Plat Technologies, Engineer Taofik Abdulkareem Babaita, said that the programme would aid in developing the children.
He said the main purpose of the exercise is to encourage reading culture among students.
