Kogi violence: Police bans rally, procession, illegal siren use

Violence rocks Lokoja over Dino Melaye

FOLLOWING the violence that engulfed Lokoja, the Kogi State capital in Monday, the state police command has banned all forms of rally, procession and demonstration in any part of the state.

The police commissioner, Kogi State command, Mr Wilson Inalegwu, who said this in Wednesday, said the ban was indefinite.

According to him, the situation would not be reviewed until the current tense political situation in the state improves.

The police commissioner while speaking with senior police officers at the command headquarters, he regretted the violence that led to the death of some people in the state capital.

He reiterated his earlier call on politicians to always obtain police permission before holding any rally.

The police commissioner said the decision to place the ban was reached at an emergency meeting of the state security council held on Tuesday.

According to him, no procession, rally and demonstration will be allowed again in the state without a threat assessment from area commanders and the divisional police officers to be approved by him.

He further directed that vehicles engaging in illegal use of siren on the highways in the state should be impounded as from June 22.

He said that vehicles with covered plate numbers and illegible plate numbers should be arrested, saying that violators would be arrested and prosecuted.

He said those exempted were the state governor, his deputy, ambulances, emergency response vehicles and the Central Bank of Nigeria bullion vans.

He directed his officers to write formally to local government chairmen, state commissioners, traditional rulers and others in of the decision banning them from using siren.

“No abuses will be tolerated; it is strictly for crime control and not any other motive,” Inalegwu said.
