Kano govt recovers N28m ‘March salaries’ paid to dead, retired workers

The Kano State Government has recovered over ₦27 million in payments made to 247 individuals who had either retired or passed away as of March 2025.

However, the state government stated, “Individuals found to be involved in the fraudulent activity will be held fully accountable in accordance with the law.”

This was as the government disclosed that it uncovered fraudulent payments amounting to ₦27,824,395.40 in the March 2025 salary payroll.

According to a statement signed by the Information Officer in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Tanko, and made available to the press in Kano, the irregularities were discovered during a validation exercise conducted by the Pay Parade Committee.

Tanko said that the amount was promptly recovered and returned to the Local Government Treasury.

“The government remains resolute in its commitment to purge the payroll system of irregularities and hold perpetrators accountable,” he said.

He further stated that, “The committee will commence its operations shortly, involving all stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive review of the payroll system.”

He also added, “Further investigation will be conducted to determine the extent of the fraud and identify those involved.”
