Kano Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been commended for providing 73,800 desks and chairs to schools across the state.
This gesture has significantly reduced the number of pupils learning on bare floors.
However, despite this progress, several schools still face challenges.
Yelwa Model Primary School, with 1,164 pupils and 36 teachers, lacks functional toilets and a secure perimeter fence, making it vulnerable to theft. The school has experienced serial theft, with items such as the school generator, refrigerator, and borehole system machine stolen.
Other schools, like Unhogo Special Model Primary School, struggle with inadequate teacher numbers, with only 15 teachers for 2,943 pupils. The absence of functional toilets and a dispensary poses serious health hazards, and pupils are often taken to nearby maternity centers when they fall ill.
Pupils and staff are calling on the state government to address these issues, including providing enough toilets, qualified teachers, and improved infrastructure.
The construction of new classrooms is underway, with some reaching 80% completion.
The state government’s efforts to improve education are commendable, but more needs to be done to address the lingering challenges facing schools in Kano.
