Jigawa state government has expanded a total sum of N1.1 billion and supported girls’ child education as part of the free girls’ child education policy of the state.
Governor Malam Umar Namadi disclosed this in a speech delivered while flagging off the distribution of 30,000 sets of school uniforms to senior secondary school girls in the state.
Malam Umar Namadi explained that his administration has spent over N1 billion renovating 12 girls’ senior secondary schools across the state.
According to him, “The state government, under its policy for free girls child education, has paid a scholarship to over 10,000 girls studying at various tertiary institutions across Nigeria.”
He added that presently, 121 girls children in Cyprus are under the state’s government sponsorship to read medicine for the sum of N150 million, while 70,000 exercise books are procured under the AGAIL project and distributed free of charge to girls children at the senior secondary school of the state.
Malam Namadi maintained that “education is one of the key sectors on his 12-point agenda, and it will continue to receive a large share of the state government’s annual budget.”.
“We can’t achieve our dreams for Greater Jigawa without revitalising the state education sector and expanding access to quality education for all children in the state, he emphasises.
The governor then reiterated his commitment to accord special priority to girls’ child education to bridge the gap in the sector.
In his speech, the state commissioner for higher education, Yusif Isah Chamo, said that the distribution of the free uniform is part of government policy on promoting girl child enrollment and retention in schools.
“The intervention made by the led Governor Malam Umar Namadi administration to enhance girls child education as well as improve state education cannot be mentioned in a limited time, and the impacts have already started manifesting,” Dr Chamo declared.
