My 5-year-old son recently had a fit which lasted for a few seconds but had all of us in the family worried. Can this be Epilepsy? We don’t have a family history of this.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which a person has two or more unprovoked seizures that occur more than 24 hours apart. However, a seizure is an excessive surge of electrical activity in the brain that can cause a variety of symptoms, depending on which parts of the brain are involved. Your brain works by sending electrical signals through nerve cells.
If these signals are altered or interrupted, it can cause a seizure. Seizures come in many forms and are triggered by a number of events and conditions. One seizure alone doesn’t mean you have epilepsy, but if you have two or more seizures, you may be diagnosed with epilepsy.
Seizures are the primary symptom of epilepsy, but they can also be caused by a number of other events. Non-epileptic seizures are seizures brought on by situations that aren’t related to epilepsy. These situations need to be investigated through a comprehensive medical investigation and treatment.
