India: What to know about deadly shooting of 26 tourists in Kashmir

A shocking attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir on Monday has left 26 tourists dead and at least a dozen others injured. The victims, who had come to enjoy the scenic beauty of the valley, were ambushed by gunmen in a targeted shooting that has stunned the nation.

The attack happened around 4pm near the Lidder River. Two vehicles carrying tourists were sprayed with bullets. Some of the victims tried to flee by jumping into the river, while others were trapped and gunned down at close range.

“I saw people jumping into the river. The water was red with blood.

“They were young couples. One girl was wearing a red bridal bangles set,” said a hotel staffer who witnessed the carnage.

Local authorities say many of the tourists were on their honeymoon. Among the dead are newlyweds and families, including children and elderly parents.

The gunmen are believed to be members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistan-based militant group. Police say two men carrying AK-47s emerged from the forests, fired indiscriminately, and then disappeared back into the woods.

“They fired like they were on a mission. This wasn’t random. They picked the tourist cars,” a survivor said.

The attack has triggered outrage across India. Social media is flooded with tributes, and many are calling for stronger security measures in the region.

“This is a massacre. The world needs to know what is happening here,” said a grieving local whose guesthouse lost several visitors.

No group has claimed responsibility yet. A massive manhunt is underway as security forces comb the area.

Officials have promised compensation for the families and enhanced protection for tourists, but fear is already gripping the region. Many travelers are cancelling their trips, and the usually bustling valley is suddenly silent.

What was supposed to be a season of joy and travel has turned into one of mourning and unanswered questions.
