The Inspector-General of Police, IGP, Mohammed Adamu on Wednesday inaugurated the newly promoted 40 Commissioners of Police (CPs) with a charge to the new officers not to let the Force down in the confidence reposed in them.
While decorating the officers, Adamu stated that the promotions were based on principles of seniority, merits, discipline and clean records of Service.
The IGP lauded the management of the Police Service Commission, PSC, for adhering strictly to the principle of due process in the promotion exercise which he said would in no small way boost professionalism in the Force.

He urged to brace up for critical assignments ahead of them as some of them would be deployed to critical areas of policing the Nation.
Some of the newly decorated officers include Olatunji Akingbola O., Olawale Olokode Taoheed, Gbenga Sadiku Michael, Okediji Felix Olusola, Ayim Abraham Egong, Bankole Anderson Abiodun, Ayinde Abu Mufutau Kamaldeen, Okunlola Kola, Ade Atere Christopher, Amiengheme Andrew, Younous Akeera Mohammed, Sanomi Augustine Akpofure, Salami Bolaji Amidu.
The IGP disclosed that the newly promoted CPs fit into his human capacity development requirement and expressed confidence that they would deploy their wealth of experience towards supporting the police in attaining its mandate, especially at this crucial time in the nation’s internal security evolution.
While reminding the officers that “to who much is given, much more shall be expected,” Adamu said that their competency and professionalism would now be much needed to move the Nation to the next level of policing for sustainably of internal security.
According to him, “crime as you know, is a dynamic and increasing complex phenomenon and the nation demands of you higher level of loyalty, courage and professional competence needed to move the Nigeria Police and indeed, the nation to the next level in relation to internal security.
“In furtherance to this, some of you shall be deployed to critical duty posts where your strength of character and professionalism shall be optimally tested.”
The IGP said the capacity of human assets of any organization, particularly, at strategic management level is fundamental to the attainment of the goals and mandate of such institution.
He pointed out that the rapidly changing dynamics of crime and the attendant increasing threat to security requires quality police managers that have the requisite professional knowledge, experience and competency to effectively provide leadership directed at managing such internal security realities.
He said since his appointment as IGP he had been collaborating effectively with the Police Service Commission (PSC) in ensuring that appropriate processes as emplaced to identify and promptly elevate deserving officers with unblemished records for promotion.
According to him, “this is a strategic management approach directed at motivating the workforce of the Nigeria Police in committing to the duty of addressing current and emerging internal security threats.”
Two of the newly promoted Commissioners of Police, Olawale Olokode and Okediji Olusola Felix in separate interviews with newsmen expressed gratitude to God, the IGP and the PSC on the promotion in recognition of their hard work and commitment with assurances never to let the Force and the Nation down in their various areas of operations.
This came just as the IGP on Wednesday read the riot act to the Commanders of Special Forces of the Nigeria Pole Force with a stern warning that henceforth as Commanders they would be held accountable either directly or vicariously, not only for their actions or inactions but for the professional infractions of all the personnel under their Commands.
The IGP was speaking at the conference with the Commanders of the Police Mobile Force, PMF, Counter Terrorism Unit, CTU, Special Protection Unit, SPU, of the Nigeria Police towards discussing ways and means of strengthening their operational capacity to tackle the current nation’s internal security.
According to him,” of late, there have been reports of incidents of incivility to citizens, misuse of firearms, deployment of personnel on unauthorized duties and mounting of illegal roadblocks by personnel under your watch, all against extant directives of the leadership of the Nigeria Pole force.
“These unprofessional and illegal conducts are most intolerable. Your primary duty is the protection of lives and property of citizens and strict adherence to Force orders and directives in so doing
“Indeed, the need to perform your duties within the dictate of the rule of law and best internal standard is sacrosanct and should never be compromised under any circumstances or guise”
He charged the Commanders to return to their bases with a new orientation and firm determination to demonstrate competent and team leadership that would not only sustain their profile as courageous and professional Commanders but as one that would never compromise discipline and respect for the rights of the citizens.
