Why do they call you Aremu Poki Poki?
My real name is Adebomi Olumuyiwa but, many people call me Aremu Poki Poki, The name is my praise name (oriki). I added Poki Poki to spice it up.
What kind of music do you sing?
I sing Afro pop. It is an admixture of Afro and pop music. I am doing this because I want my song to have a wider reach. I don’t like to be boxed as a musician. I want the African and world audience to have a good feel of my songs. I am glad we are getting there by the day.
How did your musical journey begin?
I started paying more attention to music when I completed my Ordinary National Diploma (OND) programme. I started singing when I was seven; it all started in the choir. But professionally, I have been recording songs about five years ago. Back then in the choir, I was a tenor singer and I did it for a couple of years and played some musical instruments. So, I would say the music journey started from the choir.
How has it been recording and releasing your songs?
Music, for me, is life. I write my songs and record my sound so that I can motivate people. I want them to know that there’s no limit to what they can achieve. It’s my dream to fulfill what my dad couldn’t achieve, though, he used to sing gospel and is still very good at it. Two of my siblings too are gospel singers.
Who are those who influenced your music career?
I listen to all types of songs, but I am always inspired by the work of late Fela Anikulapo Kuti because his music preached truth and loyalty. He spoke his mind without minding whose ox was gored. He did his thing the way he wanted and people paid and still pay attention because his sound is unique and spiritual.
What exactly are you working on now?
I am currently working on my EP album, entitled: Good Life with six songs on the playlist. I featured Oyinkande on Ki Sere produced by Tiwezi. I did Owo Nairabet, which was produced by Lamzy and its visuals shot by Dr Nell. I also dropped Fever Night remix, which featured Cee Boi, and Nah Story, which was also produced by Lamzy.
I can’t say what the future holds, but my plan this year is too keep dropping new songs and videos. I am actually planning to drop another video for the EP Album entitled: One Time. I am also planning to remix my new single with Wale Turner titled Yala Yolo.
