Lateef Adedimeji has responded to the wave of criticism following his announcement of the upcoming movie Lisabi. The actor, known for his compelling performances, has made it clear that he remains undeterred by what he describes as a deliberate attempt to undermine his work. “Nothing will stop me from pursuing my passion to deliver great films,” Adedimeji declared.
Barely 24 hours after Adedimeji announced Lisabi, social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), were flooded with reactions. The criticism largely centered on his decision to collaborate with Niyi Akinmolayan, the director behind the recent hit Jagun Jagun produced by Femi Adebayo.
Initially, Adedimeji’s announcement, which included promotional images, was met with excitement. However, the mood quickly shifted as some fans voiced their disappointment over his choice of director. The criticism wasn’t aimed at the movie itself but rather at the collaboration with Akinmolayan.
The backlash stemmed from concerns about Akinmolayan’s political affiliations and his stance on certain national issues, which have been divisive among Nigerians. Many of Adedimeji’s fans expressed their respect for his work but questioned whether partnering with Akinmolayan was the right move.
Critics argued that by working with the same director who helmed Jagun Jagun, Adedimeji risked being seen as unoriginal, especially since both films explore similar Yoruba cultural themes. They feared that Lisabi could be unfavorably compared to Jagun Jagun, diminishing its impact.
In addition to concerns about originality, some fans criticized the frequent use of the same set of actors in multiple films. They argued that this trend stifles the growth of emerging talent, limiting opportunities for young actors to showcase their skills and reducing the influx of fresh faces in the industry.
According to these critics, the Yoruba movie industry needs to diversify its talent pool to foster creativity and innovation. They believe that continually featuring the same actors could make the industry stagnant and predictable, ultimately reducing its appeal to a broader audience.
Responding to the backlash, Akinmolayan took to social media, expressing indifference to the criticism. “I’ve grown a thick skin,” he stated, urging critics to learn more about his values before passing judgment.
In his own reaction, Adedimeji emphasized his surprise at the intensity of the negative comments. “I’m genuinely surprised that some people are so determined to bring down my hard work,” he remarked. “It’s disheartening to see how quickly some individuals are ready to tear apart something I’ve put so much effort into, especially when the film hasn’t even been released yet.”
Adedimeji described the situation as an “orchestrated media war” but reaffirmed his commitment to his craft. “I understand that not everyone will appreciate what I do, but the level of hostility I’ve seen is something else. It feels like a coordinated effort to bring me down, but I won’t let it affect me.”
He reassured his fans that Lisabi would speak for itself upon its release. “I’ve always believed that the work should speak for itself. I put my heart and soul into Lisabi, and I’m confident that those who truly appreciate quality cinema will see the value in it.”
Adedimeji also expressed gratitude to his supporters, acknowledging their role in helping him stay resilient. “To my true supporters, I want to say thank you. Your encouragement means everything to me, and it’s what keeps me going even when things get tough.”
He however made it clear that he remains focused on his goals, despite the challenges. “I’ve faced challenges before, and I’m sure there will be more to come. But I’m here for the long haul, and nothing will stop me from pursuing my passion and delivering great films.”
Lisabi is set to premiere on Netflix on September 27, 2024, a fact that has only fueled the ongoing discussions among fans.
