Whether it happens in professional meetings, social settings, or personal discussions, handling interruptions confidently and appropriately can help you maintain control and communicate effectively.

In this article are tips on how to effectively deal with interruptions when speaking.

1. Stay Calm And Composed

It is natural to feel annoyed or disrespected when someone cuts you off while speaking, but reacting emotionally can escalate the situation.

To handle interruptions effectively you should maintain your composure by taking a deep breath, maintaining steady eye contact, keeping your tone calm and avoid raising your voice or showing signs of visible frustration.

2. Politely But Firmly Regain Control

If you are interrupted by someone, you should try your best to  regain control without being rude. An interruption should not be the reason you should lose your focus or derail  from the point you are trying to pass across.

3. Control The Flow Of Conversation

If you find yourself being interrupted frequently, setting conversational boundaries will be helpful in dealing with such interruptions.

You can do this by making it known before starting that everyone will get an opportunity to speak without interruptions. Doing this helps in making the meeting structured and organised.

4. Use Of  Non-Verbal Cues

Body language is a powerful tool in managing interruptions. To better handle interruptions, you can make use of body language such as raising your hand slightly or gesturing with your palm to signal an individual to wait while you conclude your line of thought.

5. Address Chronic Interrupters Directly

If you notice that someone repeatedly interrupts you, it is advisable that you approach the individual privately and sort things out. However, this conversation should be handled politely while still passing your point across.

6. Acknowledge the Interrupter (When Appropriate)

There are some instances in which interruptions are made with good intentions in mind, in this situation you are to acknowledge the person. Doing this should however not make you deviate from your line of thought, rather you should acknowledge the interrupter while still directing the conversation as you want it.

7. Develop Confidence Through Practice

Effectively dealing with interruptions has so much to do with your level of confidence.

You do not have to beat yourself up if you are not able to handle interruptions at first but with practice you get better at it.

Managing interruptions isn’t about dominating the conversation. By staying calm amd following the tips shared above you can better handle interruptions with confidence and ensure that your message gets across effectively.
