In response to the global push towards sustainability, a civil engineer, Chukwuma Okafor, is pioneering the transformation of waste tyres into innovative construction materials.
With approximately one billion tyres reaching the end of their lives each year, the initiative to recycle them into valuable resources is gaining traction as industries and governments seek eco-friendly solutions.
The first-class graduate in civil engineering from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture is leading this charge.
His research at Auburn University focuses on the stability and sustainability of geotechnical and highway infrastructure. Okafor’s analysis reveals untapped potential in the market for recycled tyres in construction, particularly in applications like soil reinforcement for highway structures.
By repurposing waste tyres into construction materials such as building blocks, paving blocks, and panels made from compressed rubber, Okafor aims to not only reduce waste but also create economically viable products. He envisions these materials offering lightweight, insulating, and cost-effective alternatives to traditional building materials, thus solving both environmental and economic challenges.
Okafor’s innovative solutions extend to exploring the use of recycled tyre materials in civil infrastructure, demonstrating their resilience and environmental advantages.
He revealed that he plans to collaborate with local businesses to establish recycling plants, accelerating the transformation of waste into wealth.
Health organisations and environmental agencies have commended these recycling practices for their positive impact on waste reduction and resource conservation.
They advocate for policies supporting the scale-up of such technologies, which is crucial for sustainable urban development.
The transition from ‘waste to profits’ through tyre recycling exemplifies how innovative thinking and sustainability can converge to create a greener future.
According to him, Nigeria stands to emerge as a leader in ecological sustainability and economic resilience in Africa through continued expansion and support for recycling initiatives.
