Govts urged to raise leaders with right skills through investment in human capacity devt

Governments at all levels in Nigeria and corporate entities have been enjoined to continue investing in human capacity development as a policy in order to raise leaders that are equipped with the right skills, knowledge, and tools.

This, it was said, would help in coping with emerging leadership challenges in a world characterised by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity.

The advice was contained in the communiqué issued by participants at the end of the 13th Strategic Leadership Ethics and Policy Making (SLEAPM) course held between February 24 and 28 at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos, Plateau State.

Over 70 participants, drawn from both public and private sectors, comprising political office holders, chief executives of organisations and top public servants from Nigeria, attended the course.

The participants also agreed that public and private should develop core organisational ethics and values and put in place appropriate reward and sanction mechanisms to deepen them

It was decided in the communique that national policies that will have serious impacts on the lives and livelihoods of citizens should be subjected to critical experts’ review by institutions such as the NIPSS before approval and implementation to avoid policy somersault, which has become synonymous with public policies in Nigeria

The participants also agreed on the need to teach the right values to children at the family level to combat corruption.

In his address at the opening ceremony, the course coordinator, Dr Ibrahim Malumfasi, stressed the importance of the training.

He reiterated the need for all participants to embrace discipline, obey instructions, and actively participate in all activities throughout the duration of the course.
