Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has reiterated his government’s commitment to combating environmental degradation and promoting sustainable livelihood and economic development.
The Governor made this statement on Monday during the official launch of the Gombe State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project Implementation support mission, which was held at the banquet hall of the Government House in Gombe.
Inuwa Yahaya emphasized that Gombe State is particularly affected by environmental challenges due to its unique geography. These challenges have had adverse effects on agricultural productivity, natural resources, and the general livelihood of the people in the state.
He mentioned issues such as incessant flooding, erratic rainfall patterns, desert encroachment, and diminishing arable lands, which have taken a toll on farmers and communities.
To address these consequences, the Governor’s administration has introduced various initiatives aimed at mitigating the adverse effects and building resilience among the population.
He highlighted the NEWMAP project, which received counterpart funding from the state government, leading to the execution of numerous developmental projects.
Another initiative mentioned by the Governor was the Gombe Goes Green (3G) project, which aims to combat desertification, deforestation, and soil degradation while beautifying the environment through the planting of four million trees in four years.
Through the 3G project, approximately 27,000 people, mostly youths, were engaged in environmental conservation efforts.
Furthermore, the state government partnered with NEWMAP to address the issue of monstrous gullies, such as the one running through Gombe State University and Malam Inna Community.
Regarding the ACReSAL project, the state government contributed 573 million Naira as counterpart funding in addition to meeting all other requirements for participation in the project.
Inuwa Yahaya assured of the government’s continued support for the successful implementation of the ACReSAL project in Gombe State, including providing additional financial assistance.
He also mentioned the inauguration of a committee for the restoration of cattle routes, grazing areas, forests, and game reserves within Gombe State as a testimony to the government’s commitment to natural resource conservation and environmental sustainability.
The Governor expressed optimism that the partnership with the World Bank through the ACReSAL project would help provide a healthy and eco-friendly environment for human habitation.
He also disclosed that the forestry unit had acquired motorcycles, tricycles, a boat, and a drone to enhance effective wildlife protection and conservation.
In his closing remarks, Governor Inuwa Yahaya thanked all development partners, sponsors, and stakeholders, especially the World Bank team and the Federal Project Management Unit, for their support in the implementation of ACReSAL projects in Gombe State.
Dr Joy Iganya Agene, the ACReSAL Project Task Team Leader, commended the Governor for his commitment to changing the ecological landscape of Gombe State, emphasizing that it aligns with the objectives of the ACReSAL project.
Mr Abdulhamid Umar, the National Project Coordinator of ACReSAL, also praised the Governor’s support in realizing the project in Gombe State, expressing hope for further success under ACReSAL.
