Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) at the end of its fourth quarterly National Executive Council meeting has frowned on the economic loss incurred through medical tourism in Nigeria and implored the government to fund the health sector.

NUAHP in its communique at the end of its fourth quarterly National Executive Council meeting in Katsina State said the 2020 budget on health still falls short of the Abuja declaration of 15 per cent of the total budget.

The communique signed by NUAHP’s president and national Public Relations Officer, Dr O. C. Ogbonna and Mr Edwin Ohaekweiro, condemned the government-induced brain drain in the health sector and asked the government to stop medical tourism by government officials.

They implored Federal Ministry of Health to address In service training for health workers and frowned at some hospital management that do not encourage professionals in their institutions to engage in training and retraining.

The union also expressed concern on the recent outbreak of yellow fever in some parts of the country and urged the government and concerned agencies to expedite action in controlling its spread and also ensure vaccination of all children.

They urged the government to effect the agreed adjustment on the CONHESS salary scale for its members, payment of the specialist allowance and employment of various health professionals into various tertiary health institutions that are faced with the gross reduction in manpower in the nation.

They asked the government to review its many PPP interventions in the health-care institutions to ensure they do not end up increasing the cost of healthcare, compromise quality, increase morbidity and mortality rate and further lower the deplorable life expectancy of Nigerians.
