With the April 15 tax deadline approaching, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced extended filing dates for residents in 13 states in the United States impacted by natural disasters.
These extensions give taxpayers additional time, with deadlines ranging from May 1 to November 3, 2025, depending on the state.
Taxpayers in the following states have until May 1, 2025, to file and pay their taxes:
Alabama
Florida
Georgia
North Carolina
South Carolina
Alaska (City and Borough of Juneau)
New Mexico (Chaves County)
Virginia (affected counties listed below)

Taxpayers in Los Angeles County, California, affected by the January wildfires, have until October 15, 2025 to file and pay their taxes.
Residents in the following states have until November 3, 2025 to file and pay:
Arkansas
Kentucky
Tennessee
West Virginia (affected counties listed below)
If you’re not in a disaster-affected zone, you can still request an automatic extension from the IRS, which will give you until October 15 to file your tax return. However, any taxes owed must still be paid by April 15 to avoid interest or penalties.
The IRS reminds taxpayers that relief is granted automatically for anyone in disaster-stricken areas, without needing to contact the agency.
“The IRS automatically provides filing and penalty relief to any taxpayer with an IRS address of record located in the disaster area,” the agency confirmed.
