…as institution pushes for university status
The Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, has announced the management and Governing Council’s readiness to hold the institution’s 22nd Convocation Ceremony on Thursday, welcoming guests from education, industry, government and traditional institutions.
At a press briefing on Monday, the Rector, Surv. Dupe Nihinlola Olayinka-Dosumu, an Associate Professor, said the school — now over a century old—has produced respected professionals, technologists and technicians in surveying, Geoinformatics and related fields that support the national economy.
She noted that many leading figures in the profession, including several Surveyor Generals, are alumni of the institution.
The Rector, a specialist in Geoinformatics, explained that the school has recorded notable progress in the past four years through deliberate efforts to strengthen its position.
She said the institution continues to train surveying professionals using modern technology and stressed that the country’s current challenges require the expertise of mapmakers and Geoinformaticians capable of deploying advanced tools.
She also stated that the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has accredited all National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND) and Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) programmes in surveying and Geoinformatics, cartography, GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing, and software and web development.
According to her, the management and Governing Council remain focused on fast-tracking the institution’s upgrade, which has encouraged growth in infrastructure, human resources and internal revenue generation.
She added that the school is fully prepared for its transition to a degree-awarding institution, with adequate facilities already in place for degree programmes in Geoinformatics and related disciplines.
Members of the Governing Council at the briefing also expressed confidence that the transition would be achieved soon.
Professor Nnanjar Gertrude Njar, Vice President for Academic and Professional Issues at the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, said the school has the quality and number of professionals needed to run degree programmes in Surveying and Geoinformatics.
Surv. Oga Sunday, representing the office of the Surveyor General of the Federation, added that upgrading the school to a degree-awarding institution would support national development and noted that funding the process would not present major difficulties.
