Forum of Former Group Managing Directors (GMDs) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has hailed the current NNPCL under the leadership of Mele Kyari for transforming the Port Harcourt Refinery (PHR) into a state-of-the-art facility.
The Forum, which was in Port Harcourt and led by Dr Jackson Gaius-Obaseki during an inspection tour, described the recent revamp of the Refinery as a monumental achievement for Nigeria’s oil and gas sector however dismissed public skepticism as a misunderstanding of the scale and complexity of the project.
“This is not the typical Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) people are used to hearing about. This was a full rehabilitation of a plant built in 1965, modernized into a world-class refinery by 2024. It’s an incredible feat that deserves recognition, Gaius-Obaseki stated.
Gaius-Obaseki who also addressed concerns about petrol pump prices said they are tied to global crude oil costs. The former GMDs called on Nigerians to appreciate the courage and dedication behind the project saying it is a major step forward for local refining capabilities.
The group, while commending Kyari’s leadership, urged him to remain focused on delivering value to Nigerians adding that the Refinery’s transformation is a testament to the potential of Nigerian ingenuity and resilience.
Chamberlain Oyibo, Funsho Kupolokun, and Andrew Yakubu who were also part of the tour echoed Gaius-Obaseki’s sentiments saying the PHR overhaul is a milestone achievement.
