Some residents of Adere community in Ado Ekiti have been sacked by flood.
The rain, which began around 2 p.m. last Wednesday, lasted for about four hours, prompting flood to take over the road that leads to the Polytechnic roundabout and left motorists plying the road stranded.
The flood, which took over a house very close to a river, rendered many homeless while three churches located in the same compound with the house were turned into ‘a pool of water’. Properties were also destroyed.
One of the residents, Pastor Abioye Emmanuel, who spoke with Community News, expressed sadness over the extent of damage by the flood.
He explained that this is the first time they would experience such occurrence.
Pastor Emmanuel said: “The water coming from NTA, Aba-Iyamedi, Egbewa and Falegan all meet here at this particular point. This channel is too narrow for the volume of water flowing through it. The only solution is for government to expand the channel that passes through this bridge for easy flow of water.”
Items destroyed by the flood are freezers, generators, computers, electronics, clothes among others.
A younger brother to one of the affected pastors, who is in charge of Christ and Grace deliverance Ministry, Ayodele Adekola, lamented that the flood prevented them from observing vigil as water took over the whole place.
“We call on government to please, as a matter of urgency, intervene in the situation. We had planned to have a vigil on Wednesday night but unfortunately, the flood prevented us. As you can see, everywhere is full of water, we have been trying to evacuate the water.
“Many motorists were stranded as the flood took over the roads. The Commissioner for Environment and another commissioner have visited this place to ascertain the level of damage done by the flood. We can’t even quantify the properties that got destroyed.
“Two of our generators worth N75,000 each were destroyed. Our speakers and other church equipment were damaged by the flood. We want government to take urgent steps to prevent recurrence,” he said.
A church of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and another one named Spirit Alive Bible Church were also ravaged by the flood.
Community News observed that some church members were evacuating water from the Spirit Alive Bible Church using pumping machine. Some properties belonging to the church which were all drenched with water were removed and placed outside.
“The flood destroyed our food items, including all my children’s clothes. As I am standing now, the only clothes I have are the ones on me. We had to vacate this house to sleep in a friend’s house. The flood pulled down the fence of our house. We want government to do something about it. Government is busy constructing flyovers while residents are being ‘carried’ away by flood,” one of the residents lamented.
