Studying effectively is not just about spending long hours with your books, but about knowing the right study techniques that can make those hours truly productive. Many students struggle with concentration, poor retention, or last-minute cramming because they lack structured learning strategies.

  • 1. Use active recall
  • 2. Practise spaced repetition
  • 3. Take regular breaks
  • 4. Summarise and teach others
  • 5. Create a distraction-free environment

As a student, understanding effective study techniques can help you learn smarter, remember more, and perform better in exams.

In this article, Tribune Online takes a look at five proven study techniques every student should try.

1. Use active recall

Active recall is one of the most effective study techniques because it involves testing yourself instead of just rereading notes. By trying to remember key points from memory, you strengthen your understanding and make information easier to recall later. Tools like flashcards or self-quizzing after each topic can make your study sessions more engaging and productive.

2. Practise spaced repetition

This is another effective study technique. Rather than cramming, review your study materials at intervals over several days. This technique helps transfer information from short-term to long-term memory. Apps like Anki or Quizlet can help you plan spaced reviews, ensuring you retain knowledge without feeling overwhelmed.

3. Take regular breaks

Studying for long hours without rest can reduce focus and retention. The Pomodoro Technique—studying for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break—helps maintain energy and concentration. Short breaks refresh the brain, allowing you to return to your work with renewed focus.

4. Summarise and teach others

Explaining a concept to someone else is one of the most powerful ways to understand it better. When you summarise topics in your own words or teach classmates, you identify gaps in your knowledge and reinforce what you have already learned.

5. Create a distraction-free environment

A quiet and organised study space improves concentration and productivity. Turn off unnecessary notifications, keep your phone away, and use background tools like white noise or calm instrumental music to stay focused. A tidy workspace also helps the mind stay calm and ready to learn.
