The Federal Government has come under severe attacks over its inability to meet the demands of the Academic Staff Union Universities (ASUU) which has resulted in the extension of a warning strike by the union.

Tribune Online recalls that the Union, last week extended its warning strike by 60 days over what it described as the insincerity of the government and its relevant agency over its demands.

ASUU had earlier embarked on a-30-day warning strike to press home its numerous demands but after a series of deadlocked meetings with the representatives of government, the Union at the end of its meeting last week extended the strike by 60 days.

X-raying the development, the relevant stakeholders in the education sector blamed the Federal government over what it described as its insensitivity to the plight of the students who are at the receiving ends.

In an interview, Mr Charles Adedigba, an educationist stressed the need for the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to take into consideration the future of over one million students in the nation’s citadel of learnings across the Country.

Adedigba added that frustration might force the affected students to take to crime if the parties involved in the impasse refused to shift ground.

Also, Uche Chinedu blamed President Muhammadu Buhari over what it described as unfriendly indisposition to the education sector.

He said the recent happenings in the sector is taking its toll on the downtrodden masses who cannot afford the exorbitant fees of the private universities.

According to him, the ongoing ASUU strike only affects the children of the poor. The children of the policymakers are either studying abroad or at the various private universities across the Country.

Chinedu added that notable politicians in the Country are indirect beneficiaries of the ongoing industrial action embarked upon as they are part owners of some of the private universities in the Country.

Most of the affected universities are now engaging in fraudulent act, noting that an idle hand is a devil’s workshop.

Also, in an interview with some of the affected students, Mary Akinola, a 200-level student of Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomoso disclosed that she has started learning hairdressing to keep herself busy during the strike period.

According to her, I am tired of sleeping at home. With the support of my parents, I have decided to learn trade. The experience garner this period will be an added advantage after my graduation.
