The Federal Government has expressed sorrow over the tragic boat accident in Borgu, Niger State, which claimed the lives of about 32 people.
In a statement on Friday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the incident as a painful tragedy, coming barely four months after devastating floods hit Mokwa, also in Niger State.
“We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, the Government, and the people of Niger State. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected by this tragedy,” Idris said.
The minister noted that the Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), will provide necessary relief support to survivors and the families of the deceased, in collaboration with the Niger State Government.
Idris also commended the Niger State Emergency Management Agency for its prompt rescue operations, which ensured that all passengers on the ill-fated boat were accounted for.
While urging Nigerians to prioritise safety on inland waterways, he stressed that no one should embark on boat journeys without wearing protective life jackets, warning that safety precautions often determine the difference between life and death.
As part of measures to prevent similar tragedies, the Minister directed the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to launch a nationwide sensitisation campaign on water transport safety.
