FG exploring available options to cushion high cost of food items — FCCPC

The acting Executive Vice Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Dr Adamu Abdullahi, has said that the Federal government is exploring available options to cushion the effect of the high cost of food items.

Dr Abdullahi, who made this known on Tuesday during a fact-finding survey to the Galadima market and Dawanau grains market in Kano, disclosed that the federal government is worried by the plight of the masses, especially on prices of food items.

According to him, “Food is a very essential commodity because you have to eat first before anything else and once the people haven’t eaten, the government cannot sleep,” he said.

He however hinted that part of the organization’s mandate is to visit markets across the six geopolitical zones to examine what is responsible for the hike in the price of commodities.

He further disclosed that “We have found out some of the challenges and have gotten a lot of takeaways and would advise government appropriately so as to ensure prices of goods come down.”

He therefore stated that part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu is to make sure that Nigerians get a better deal that will make them believe in government efforts to make life meaningful to Nigerians.

Abdullahi explained that some of the issues raised by the traders’ associations in the markets visited include issues of insecurity, high cost of transportation, and farmers’ interest in farming cash crops rather than food crops.

He stated, “Like  hibiscus and beniseed, mopping of farm produce from farmers at a fair price, importation of food items to meet up the shortage of supply among others”

Abdullahi then promised that FCCPC would continue to ensure fair market practices and the removal of all impediments to a free market in the country.
