Enugu lawmaker presents four months scorecard to constituents

House of Representatives member, representing Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency of Enugu State, Honourable Chidi Mark Obetta, has presented to his constituents his achievements in the National Assembly since their inauguration about four months ago.

The presentation was made October 21st, 2023 during a Town Hall Meeting he organised at the PAA Hall, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State.

The Nigerian Tribune gathered that, participants were drawn from the two Local Government Areas that make up the constituency which included: Nsukka and Igbo-Eze South.

Those who attended were Traditional Rulers, Town Union Presidents!-general, representatives of traders, Market Women, Women Groups, Youths, NURTW, Clergymen, Academia, Professional Bodies, NLC, TUC, NULGE, Students Union Government, Heads of Security Agencies, Civil Society Organizations, some members of the National and state Assembly, Members of National and State Assembly and Party Stakeholders.

It was also gathered that indigenes of the constituency in the Diaspora including London, Australia joined the town hall meeting via zoom platform and contributed actively during the interactive session.

Speaking further during the meeting, the Labour Party lawmaker, noted that the main aim of the town hall meeting is to create an opportunity for constituents across the constituency or political segments and the relevant stakeholders to have face-to-face conversations with him as the lawmaker representing them in the 10th National Assembly.

He said it is a platform for constituents’ engagement.

He informed the constituents about his legislative strides thus far which include, motions for Government’s intervention for construction of 2 major access roads in the constituency.

He further informed his people that he has presented a bill which has passed 1st reading for the Establishment of Federal Medical Centre, Obukpa.

He also laid before the constituents his legislative action plans which includes engaging in his core legislative duties, embarking on constituency intervention projects having identified 91 different pressing needs which cut across different concerns like construction of access roads, provision of boreholes, rural electrification projects, construction of skill acquisition centers, provision of solar street lights, youth and women empowerment etc. as presented to by his constituents, procurement of projects through public engagements and partnership with development partners and agencies; and human capital development, empowerment and social welfare programmes for the youths, women and the aged.

Obetta assured his constituents that his legislative actions and programmes will be anchored on some core value principles: transparency, accessibility, responsiveness, inclusivity, consistency, building consensus and improving lives.

He announced the appointment of thirty-six Special Assistants that will be assisting him in interfacing with Constituents at the ward level.

The lawmaker used the occasion to inaugurate his Chidi Mark Obetta Foundation Board of Trustees Chaired by Dr. Obiorah Ekwueme and the Agricultural Committee Chaired by Mr. Mike Eze, adding that the Foundation has instituted a Five Hundred Thousand Naira Empowerment Fund to support the enterprises of the thirty-six ward Special Assistants he appointed.

Hon. Obetta expressed gratitude for the support he has received so far from all constituents and assure them of more devidends of democracy.

Participants in their seperate speeches while commending the lawmaker, for convening the town hall meeting says it was a clear testimony of his commitment to be accountable, transparent and responsive to the yearnings and aspirations of his constituents.

They commended him for setting up the Agricultural Committee that will oversee the setting up agricultural cooperatives in all the 36 wards of Nsukka and Igbo-Eze South Federal constituency.

The participants equally recommended that attention should be given to the 20 Federal and link roads in Nsukka and Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency which are in deplorable state; Nsukka-Adani-Anambra; Ogurugu-Kogi; Nsukka-Ibagwa-Okutu-Odolu; 9th Mile-Opi Junction (old raod); 9th Mile-ObolloAfor-Otukpa; Ikem-Ebonyi; amongst others

Other recommendation include; provision of access to soft agricultural loans and grants to assist farmers in Nsukka/Igbo-Eze South Federal Constituency, provision of bursary from Primary to tertiary education level for indigent constituents and assistance to widows, as well as women representation in political appointments.
