MEMBERS of the Enugu State House of Assembly on Thursday confirmed the Chairman designate for the State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) Dr Michael Ezeugwu Ajogwu (SAN)
Ajogwu, by the confirmation of the legislative assembly will now replace the former ENSIEC boss, Mr Boniface Eneh.
Also confirmed during the plenary session were four members: Hon David Okeke Ngene; Hon Geoffrey Emeka Ede; Engr Mrs Maryrose Obiageli Abba as well as Dr Green Anike Nweze.
During the screening that did not last more than thirty minutes, the new ENSIEC chairman, Dr Ajogwu and Hon Ngene were asked to take a bow because their outstanding credentials.
A member representing Uzo-Uwani Constituency, Hon John-kevin Ukuta, urged his colleagues that there was no need screening the two gentlemen because of their imposing curriculum vitae and their wealth of experience and his colleague and his colleague gave it a nod.
One of the nominees, Dr Green Ngene posited that the Commission under their care would not tolerate electoral irregularities in conducting council polls, stressing, “There will be no magu, magu and wuru, wuru. The Commission is apolitical. We’ll do the right things.”
Another nominee, Hon Emeka Ede, former chairman, Enugu North Local Government Council, maintained that ENSIEC as an electoral umpire would not side any parties or individuals, pointing out that they would conduct an unbiased council polls.
The Leader of the House, Hon Ikechukwu Ezeugwu explained before the screening that the exercise was in line with the provision of the Constitution Section 197 (1c) and moved that the House be dissolved into a committee of the whole to enable members screen the executive nominees.
