1. Easter is the oldest Christian holiday

Easter is even older than Christmas. It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is the foundation of the Christian faith. The first Easter celebrations started in the second century, which makes it the most ancient Christian celebration today.

2. Easter doesn’t have a fixed date

Unlike holidays like Christmas, Easter Sunday changes every year. It is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. That means it can fall anytime between March 22 and April 25.

3. The Easter Bunny didn’t come from the Bible

You won’t find the Easter Bunny in any religious texts. This fluffy character came from German folklore. German immigrants brought the idea of an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” to America in the 1700s, and over time, it became part of modern Easter traditions.

4. Eggs symbolise new life

One of the most well-known Easter symbols is the egg. Long before Easter, eggs were used in spring festivals to represent new life and rebirth. Christians later adopted the egg as a symbol of Jesus’ resurrection from the tomb.

5. Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover

The timing of Easter is connected to Passover, a Jewish holiday. Jesus’ last supper was a Passover meal, and his crucifixion happened shortly after. Because of this, Easter and Passover often fall around the same time, though their celebrations are different.

6. Americans eat millions of chocolate bunnies every year

Every Easter, Americans eat around 90 million chocolate bunnies. According to the National Confectioners Association, most people eat the ears first. Along with jelly beans and marshmallow Peeps, Easter is one of the biggest candy-selling seasons of the year, second only to Halloween.

7. The White House holds an annual Easter Egg Roll

Since 1878, the White House has hosted an Easter Egg Roll on its lawn. This fun tradition was started by President Rutherford B. Hayes. Children come together to roll decorated eggs across the grass using spoons. It’s one of the oldest and most joyful American Easter events.

These interesting facts about Easter help us understand why it remains a powerful and popular celebration each year.
