Don’t criticise army chief over stand on indivisibility of Nigeria –Activist

Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Tukur Burutai

An Abuja based legal practitioner and human rights activist, Barrister Ugochukwu Osuagwu has called on well meaning Nigerians to support the Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai, on his recent comment that those agitating for the balkanization of Nigeria should forget it.

The lawyer admonished those who criticised the army chief to instead lend their support so that his effort to ensure peace and unity in the country will be successful.

Osuagwu in a statement on Sunday stated that the world has embraced globalization, it would be wrong for any section of this country to agitate for separation.

“It would be better for well meaning Nigerians to support the efforts of the federal government in its onerous task to take Nigeria out of the present recession. You cannot be head of Nigerian Army which symbolises unity of the Country and still encourage IPOB and others to dismember the country,” he added.

It could be recalled that the COAS last Monday after receiving the Millennium Award said that those agitating for independent state, mostly IPOB for Biafra should forget it.

This statement attracted criticisms from some people, saying he was speaking for himself.

The activist suggested rather that Ndigbo should fight for true federalism and politick on how to get Igbo presidency after PMB, adding that Buratai does not hate Igbos but he is rather a detribalized Nigerian.

The activist warned those who are using the opportunity of free speech on social media to insult Buratai and PMB to be mindful of the Cybercrime Acts which provides for sanctions where free speech is abused.
