Ayisatu had dragged his husband to court, alleging that he was troublesome and irresponsible. She added that he was a habitual liar.
The plaintiff stated that she couldn’t tolerate her husband’s defiant behaviour anymore and, therefore, appealed to the court to separate them and grant her custody of the only child in their marriage.
Akeem agreed to the claim but told the court his wife was unreliable and unfaithful to him.
After he had listened to the duo, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade, observed that there was no more love between them. He, therefore, dissolved the marriage and awarded custody of their child to the plaintiff.
The defendant was ordered to pay the sum of N4,000 monthly as their child’s feeding allowance and be responsible for her education and healthcare.
Ayisatu stated thus: “My Lord, when I met my husband, he presented himself as a gentleman. He always appeared neat and presentable. He was also reasonable in the way he discussed and handled issues.
“I believed he was decent and cultured and therefore, decided to go into wedlock with him.
“Immediately we got married, he started showing his true colour. He cared less about his appearance and dressed shabbily. I realised he was loose with his mouth and was a talkative.
“He was always impatient and raised argument on every issue. He also picked fault in everything I did and derived pleasure in fighting me.
“My lord, my husband is a liar. I discovered after we got married that many of the things he told me about himself were lies. My greatest discovery was that he already had two wives. I was shocked when I learned of this, but he waved off the issue when I asked him.
“He reneged on his promise to take care of me and our child and neglected our needs.
“I reported him to his mother but she kept making excuses for him and was always supporting him.
“My lord, I’m not proud being married to a liar. I, therefore, pray that you separate us,” the plaintiff stated.
“I don’t agree to divorce,” Akeem told the court. “But if her mind is made up on divorcing me, then so be it.
“Since she has succeeded in soiling my name before the court, I also want the court to know that she’s an adulterer. She hops from one bed to another. Our relationship became strained because of her adulterous acts.
“Since she has openly declared before the court that she no more wants me, I also don’t need her again, “Akeem told the court.
