Diabetes: Obasanjo foundation to screen 10 million Nigerians

Obasanjo

No fewer than 10 million Nigerians are expected to be screened within the next one year for Diabetes Mellitus.

This was disclosed by the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Foundation, Dr Olalekan Makinde, at a news conference heralding the year 2021 World Diabetes Day on November 14.

The CEO noted that the screening would help in discovering many people living with the disease and assist them with proper diagnosis to prevent untimely death.

He explained that the screening would be done across the states of the federation at no cost.

Makinde said the Foundation would be partnering with Federal Medical Centres in each state of the federation so as to record huge success.

The Chief Promoter of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, said diabetes is not a killer disease if patients could adhere strictly to its dos and dont’s.

He hinted that he had been living with the disease for about 40 years because he had been maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Obasanjo identified regular exercise, avoiding alcohol; smoking and eating a healthy diet as some of the factors that could make a diabetic patient live longer.

Obasanjo said: “Diabetes is a disease that affects people across the globe. It is not limited by age, race, geographical location, social position, religious beliefs or political association.

“It is a disease that strikes you whether you are white, black or yellow. And it is a disease that, for now, there is no known cure, but it can be managed like other diseases that have no cure.

“And to know that it can be managed, I think I’m a typical example, I have been diagnosed diabetic for more than 40 years ago. And the fact that after 40 years of being diabetic, I’m still alive, kicking and walking about, doing within limit all the things that I would want to do, carrying out my exercises and going places is an indication that if you are diabetic, you can manage it.

“And it is simple, there are dos and don’ts once you know that you are a diabetes patient, stick to the dos and move away from the don’ts and then you can live for as long as God has destined you to live in active service to humanity and to God.

“Let us mark this diabetes day with resolve by those of us who are diabetic to do what is right.

“And those of you who are close to us, diabetes patients, make sure that you do not inadvertently continue to commit suicide by not doing what you should do and by doing what we should not do.”
