Doctors in Delta State on Thursday declared an indefinite strike to press for the release of one of their colleagues, Dr Wilson Iboyitet who was kidnapped while on duty at the General hospital in the creek town of Ojobo, Burutu local government area of the state.

The doctors in Ughelli medical zone had earlier observed a two-day warning strike and threatened that the entire doctors in the state will commence full strike by yesterday if the victim was not rescued by security agencies.

Addressing a press conference in Asaba, Chairman of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP) Dr Olayinka Ebikagboro stated that the strike will not be called off until Iboyitete is unconditionally released unharmed by his captors.

She expressed concern that over five medical doctors in the State have been kidnapped and made to go through torture in the last four year.

“We salute the commitment and zeal of our members who offer essential medical services to Deltans at the grassroots despite the perpetual fear of kidnappers, armed robbers and other hoodlums in the host communities where they work.

“No doctor can give his best in an environment where his life is not only unsecured but perpetually threatened,” she said.

The chairman emphasised the need to employ and deploy trained security personnel in all hospitals, erection of perimeter fencing in some hospitals which are presently unfenced and provision of electricity in all hospitals even urged she host communities “not to look at hospital staff as strangers and soft targets for kidnapping by hoodlums.”
