The Chief Judge of Delta State, Hon. Justice Theresa Diai, has released one inmate after reviewing 336 cases of awaiting trial inmates at the Warri Correctional Centre during the first quarter prison visit for 2025.
Speaking during the visit, Justice Diai noted that many of the cases were at advanced stages and expressed hope that by her next quarterly visit, most of the matters would have been concluded.
The Chief Judge explained that the released inmate was freed based on legal advice from the Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP), which determined that he had no case to answer.
She commended the judges handling the cases and the Department of Public Prosecutions for their diligence in prosecuting the matters.
Hon. Justice Diai also urged the chairmen of various branches of the Nigerian Bar Association to ensure that their members take the defence of inmates’ cases seriously rather than abandoning them.
In an interview with newsmen, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Anthony Orhorhoro, appreciated the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, and the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Mr Omamuzo Erebe, for their unwavering support. He also advised individuals engaging in criminal activities to desist from such actions.
As part of the ongoing prison visits, Justice Diai and her team also visited the Sapele Correctional Centre, where a total of 138 warrants were reviewed.
The exercise will continue with visits to the Kwale, Agbor, and Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centres.
